Now it could be just our imagination running wild, but the invite image for the WWDC 2021, set for June 7-11, has got our head spinning wondering if Apple is preparing to finally talk about its developments in augmented reality and virtual reality. More specifically, its well rumoured augmented reality glasses. 

It is rumoured that Apple are planning to develop Augmented Reality (AR) contact lenses, although it is clearly a somewhat distant product considering Apple’s AR wearables are still to be released.

Earlier this February, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially granted Apple a patent which related to their mixed reality (XR) system, including a head mounted display (HMD) and a base station which could be a Mac, iPhone/iPad or game console to play VR content and more.

As 2021 gets underway, Apple continues to reveal more of their augmented reality device developments, and the latest update comes as insight into the specific components that Apple intends to build into its AR product.

Recently, Apple had announced that their Lead Hardware Engineer Chief Dan Riccio would be stepping down from his role to solely focus on a new project within the company. In the latest report by Bloomberg, the ‘new project’ is Apple’s rumoured augmented reality, virtual reality, or mixed reality headset.

The rumours of Apple launching their first augmented reality device has been whispered since 2017 following a report made by Bloomberg. Now, it appears that Apple is closer than ever to launching their first augmented reality product, thought to be the ‘Apple Glasses’. 

A recent article by the Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, claims that Apple is working with Sony on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology that would be used in its reported AR headset. It is rumoured that the headset could be announced as early as 2021, the article claims.
