yundai Mobis, the 7th largest automotive supplier in the world, has announced this week that it has awarded a significant investment in UK based Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display (AR HUD) company Envisics.

AR HUD is the next generation feature for vehicles, with safety and convenience being paramount. The AR HUD connects driving information with the road ahead in real time and projects that information onto the vehicle’s windscreen in the driver's line of sight.

Hyundai Mobis, confirmed it has been making aggressive investments in electrification and autonomous driving over the past three years, demonstrating its focus on actively discovering and developing next generation technology for in vehicles.

Previously, the company has worked with Aptiv PLC to develop its ‘Motional’ autonomous driving as well as collaborating with Velodyne to develop a lidar-based advanced driver assistance system. Hyundai Mobis has also opened three new electrification plants in Korea.

Executive Vice President and CTO of Hyundai Mobis, Sung Hwan Cho stated:

“Hyundai Mobis will jointly develop autonomous driving specialized AR HUD with Envisics, targeting mass production by 2025,”

Cho continued:

“We will proactively present the next generation AR HUD solutions to global automakers for increased safety and convenience to avoid distracting drivers.”

Envisics is a holographic technology company who mass-produces AR HUDs based on dynamic holography. Hyundai Mobis stated that AR HUD is currently in the initial market creation stage, but is considered to be a major up and coming field in vehicle technology which will expand competitively within the next 10 years.

AR HUD can be developed in one of two ways, either digital holography or geometrical optics. Envisics’ use digital holographic technology which utilises and enhances advanced hologram implementation methods, creating a software defined broad field of view without the need for additional optical devices. By using digital holographic technology, it significantly reduces the need for additional hardware which optimises the next generation AR HUD, according to the Envisics.
