ugmented reality is changing how we interact with cars. For example, Porsche is utilising AR to help technicians to service cars and recently more has launched an app that superimposes sports cars onto your driveway.

Now, Kia has announced that they are launching an AR owner's manual dubbed the 'Kia Owner's Manual App' developed in partnership with Google Cloud and Megazone. So the next time you buy a new Kia, it might not have a traditional printed owner's manual.

The Kia Owner’s Manual App, now lets owners of new model Kia’s use their smartphone camera to instantly and visually identify the concepts of all the symbols inside their car.

To help new Kia owners understand all the ins and outs of their new vehicle, the South Korean brand has created an inventive AR user manual, compatible with smart devices.

The app which utilises Google Cloud’s symbol scanner and symbol index, helps the new owner to quickly and efficiently understand and demonstrate to the user the name and functions of all the elements inside their new car.

Eui-sung Kim, Vice President and Head of Global Dealer & Service of Kia Motors had this to say about the app:

"The Kia Owner's Manual App will offer a unique customer experience with our products... Kia drivers will be able to enhance the safety and convenience of ownership with the app, which provides easy and intuitive information on the various functions of their vehicle and our latest technologies."

This new jump in technology for Kia has been possible with the help of Google Cloud’s image learning technology based on the artificial intelligence platform. The symbol scanner used in Kia’s app enables identification, from every angle within the car, creating a seamless experience for the user. For example, if the user scans the cruise control symbol on the steering wheel with their smartphone, the app will identify the symbol through AR and display a video that will play and demonstrate all the detailed functions of this system.

In addition to the function above, the Kia User Manual App also provides a search option, allowing the user to search the meanings behind symbols and warning indicators which are illustrated and explained.

The Kia User Manual App has been set to launch for their customers in the back half of 2020 and will be implemented into all their new models.

Potentially, we can imagine the AR technology evolving into a diagnosis app in the future that allows you to take a photo or record a video of a technical issue to fix problems
