The Sundance Film Festival is an annual film festival organised by the Sundance Institute. The event takes place each January in Park City, Utah, Salt Lake City, and at the Sundance Resort, and is the largest independent film festival in the United States. The Festival’s 2021 New Frontier showcase is in full swing and due to the pandemic, the organisers have created a plethora of genre-defying entertainment available via a custom-built social platform composed of a virtual gallery, cinema house and lounge area. The virtual gallery features 14 immersive displays, one of which is an augmented reality documentary short film, named Fortune!

Back in April 2020, Denmark born toy company LEGO made a deal with Universal Music Group to develop a new interactive way of inspiring the next generation of fans and creative visionaries. The deal would center around the development of a new suite of LEGO products, set to launch in 2021, but further details remained anonymous. 

Ariel AI, a British artificial intelligence start-up which focuses on augmented reality, has been acquired by Snap, the parent company of Snapchat. 

Gibson has created the ‘Epic’ Gibson App, claiming it is “the only guitar app you will need”. The app features some impressive-sounding elements, including Audio Augmented Reality as well as the ability to book a consultation with a Gibson guitar tech.

Pinterest is enhancing its virtual makeup try-on experience with an innovative augmented reality feature which allows users to virtually try on different shades of eyeshadow. The initial offering from Pinterest features over 4,000 shades from brands including, YSL, Urban Decay, Lancome and NYX Professional Makeup. 

From February 12 to 28, Vancouver’s public spaces will be transformed into an interactive, open-air art gallery with the help of augmented reality technology, to showcase murals by local and international artists.

Today is inauguration day for President-elect Joe Biden, and to celebrate, his inauguration committee has rolled out augmented reality lenses on Snapchat for voters to snap selfies with to celebrate the transition of power from a distance.
